Houghton Regis has a longer history than Dunstable and is even mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name Houstone. During the time of the Domesday Survey, much of what is now Dunstable was part of Houghton parish. When Dunstable was founded by Henry I, he compensated the men of Houghton by giving them Buckwood, a wood. At that time, Houghton paid a tax of three pounds by weight,
twenty shillings of blanch silver to the King, and one ounce of gold to the Sheriff. The inhabitants of Houghton Regis were once employed in straw plaiting, and in 1689 they, along with the residents of neighbouring villages, petitioned against a bill that made it mandatory to wear woollen hats. They argued that the straw plaiters and farmers would suffer as they now received good prices for their straw, and English wool was not suitable for hat making, so they would not be compensated. Gary Cooper, an Academy Award-winning American actor, lived and attended school in Houghton Regis. The men of Houghton once claimed exemption from tolls in Dunstable market.
